Athletic Facility, Phase I

Project Summary:
BJFW has provided engineering services on two phases of this project to date - Master Plan Development and
Phase 1, Six Squash Courts. The existing Loomis athletic complex consists of three separate buildings and
subsequent additions that range in age from 1932 to 1975. Currently the buildings are joined by a pedestrian
tunnel. Under the Master Plan phase, BJFW evaluated existing structural, mechanical and electrical systems for condition, code compliance, and capacity for proposed modifications during the period the project program was being developed.
Following program publication several iterations of conceptual plans calling for construction over a 10 year time
span were developed for Owner approval. The Master Plan calls for new double gymnasium with seating for team events, a new mezzanine in the existing gym for a wrestling arena, a new central entry and athletic department offices, squash courts, team and training rooms, sports medicine suite, locker and shower rooms, and other support spaces.

Phase 1, at $2,100,000 was completed in 1996, and includes six squash courts, new locker/shower rooms, demolition, temporary and permanent alterations to existing locker facilities, and code updating for the permanent portion of the project. BJFW provided structural engineering (which includes some special foundation requirements due to poor soil sand high ground water in proximity of the Connecticut River flood plain), mechanical engineering (HVAC, plumbing, fire protection), and electrical engineering (lighting, power, fire alarm, communications).
