Design of Elbridge Road Bridge Over Shultz Pond Brook

Loureiro was retained by the City of New Britain to complete preliminary and final design for the replacement of Elbridge Road bridge over Shultz Pond Brook (ConnDOT Br. No. 088009). These structures are part of ConnDOT’s local bridge program and will also be reviewed by the Department as required for funding.

The existing bridge structure consists of concrete flat deck over abutments and is currently in need of replacement. The replacement structure consists of a precast concrete box culvert with cast-in-place ornamental stamped concrete head and barrier walls and smooth concrete wing walls. Loureiro provided wetland delineation, geotechnical investigations, preliminary engineering, preliminary and final design drawings, technical specifications, quantity and cost estimates, hydrologic and hydraulic analysis of both the existing and proposed structures, permit applications, and applications for funding under the State’s Local Bridge Program. All drawings and specifications prepared for this project conform to City of New Britain and ConnDOT standards as applicable.

Highlights

• Design included aesthetic improvements fitting the new structure into the neighborhood served
• The box design, advanced by Loureiro, saved the city a considerable amount of money compared to the contemplated arch approach
• Construction sequence prepared by Loureiro overcame the challenges of maintaining access during construction, the logistics and practicality was assessed by our construction group
• An assessment was made for providing an alternative temporary bridge access during construction
• Hydrologic and hydraulic analyses as necessary for flood certification from the state was completed
