The manufacturing process at Zygo involved
several wet processes that produced wastewater streams containing
cleaners, fine abrasive solids, acid etchant residues, and other
regulated contaminants including boron. Most of these wastes are
commonly treated, but the concentrations of boron created unusual
treatment requirements. LEA researched available technologies
and evaluated samples through several treatment scenarios.
Based upon our research and analysis, we designed a treatment
system that removed the abrasive solids, reduced the concentration
of boron by 95% and adjusted the pH of the wastewater to within
permit limits.

LEA prepared the discharge permit
application for submittal to the CT DEP.
In conjunction with Zygo personnel we specified a building requirement
and designed and installed a treatment system that included chemical
neutralization, solids settling and filter press reduction, and
final chemical polishing through
a ultrafiltration system. We provided system
start-up supervision and operator instruction. Operating and Maintenance
manuals were prepared for both the operating personnel and the
CT DEP.
As a continuing support service we provided health and safety
training and contract operation oversight.
