The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve
planned to construct a training building at their base in Fort Devens,
Massachusetts. The project architect, Fletcher Thompson, retained
LEA to provide plans and specifications for these utility services:
water, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, electrical power, telephone,
fire alarm and gas.
About the storm sewer: Our design included collection, treatment
and storage. The treatment system, an oil and silt removal unit,
handled the initial runoff from the parking areas and then discharged
to the storage system. Because of space restrictions on the site,
we designed the storage system for use under the parking area. Our
storage facility retained and infiltrated only the flow associated
with the site development and by-passed the balance of the stormwater. |

About the water service. Our design included both
potable water and water for fire protection. We conducted hydrant
flow testing of flow and pressure to verify the suitability of
the existing system. The sizes of the service lines were based
on the water consumption requirements of the building.
All other utilities-sanitary sewer, electrical power, telephone,
fire alarm, and gas-were connected to the existing services.
